Nasal rinses can be done with a simple salt water solution or with over-the-counter saline products such as a neti pot or bulb syringe.

 To do a nasal rinse, simply fill the device with a saline solution, tilt your head to the side, and gently pour the solution into one nostril while keeping the other nostril closed. Allow the solution to flow out the other nostril and repeat on the opposite side. Be sure to use sterile or distilled water when performing a nasal rinse and to follow all instructions provided by the manufacturer of your chosen device.


2) Inhale steam

Inhaling steam is a great way to help ease breathing difficulties and reduce pain. The hot, moist air from the steam can help loosen mucus in the nose and throat and provide relief from congestion. It can also help reduce inflammation in the airways, allowing for easier breathing.

To use this method, fill a large bowl with boiling water and add a few drops of essential oil, such as eucalyptus or peppermint. Lean over the bowl with a towel draped over your head and inhale the steam for 10 to 15 minutes. Make sure to keep your eyes closed during this time.

Drinking warm beverages like herbal tea or warm broth can be especially helpful for loosening up mucus and helping you breathe better. Avoiding caffeinated beverages like coffee and energy drinks can also be beneficial, as caffeine can constrict airways and make it harder to breathe.

Finally, make sure to avoid sugary and alcoholic beverages when you are having difficulty breathing. These can irritate your throat and lungs, making it even harder to breathe.


5) Avoid irritants

Common irritants to avoid include smoke, dust, pollen, pet dander, and chemicals. If you know you're in an environment with any of these irritants, wear a mask to help protect yourself. Additionally, try to avoid physical activity in polluted areas or when pollen counts are high. Additionally, avoid taking hot showers or using strong scents such as perfumes or air fresheners, as these can also irritate your lungs.


6) Perform gentle chest physical therapy

Chest physical therapy, also known as chest physiotherapy, is an important part of helping to relieve breathing difficulties. The therapy helps break up mucus and secretions that are present in the lungs. This can help open up the airways and make breathing easier.

When performing chest physical therapy, it’s important to start gently. You may be tempted to put too much force into the technique but that can actually cause more harm than good. Instead, use gentle massage techniques on the chest and back. Use your hands to rub the chest and back in circular motions, which helps loosen the mucus so it can be cleared out of the lungs. It’s also important to remember to keep breathing normally while performing the massage. 

It’s also beneficial to perform some postural drainage after the massage. This involves tilting your body in different directions so that gravity can help clear out the secretions from your lungs.

7) Try breathing exercises

1. Diaphragmatic Breathing: This type of breathing is done by lying down with one hand on the abdomen. Slowly inhale through the nose and exhale through pursed lips. As you inhale, focus on feeling the abdomen rise and fall. 

2. Pranayama Breathing: Pranayama is an ancient yoga practice that helps to promote relaxation and reduce stress. To do Pranayama breathing, sit comfortably with your back straight and your eyes closed. Inhale slowly through the nose, counting to four, then hold for four seconds before exhaling through pursed lips for a count of four. 

3. Alternate Nostril Breathing: This exercise is done by sitting up with your eyes closed. Place your right thumb over your right nostril and your ring finger over your left nostril. Inhale slowly through the right nostril, then close it off with your thumb and exhale through the left nostril. Inhale through the left nostril and close it off with your ring finger before exhaling through the right nostril. Repeat this exercise 10 times. 

These breathing exercises can help relieve pain associated with difficulty in breathing, while also providing a sense of relaxation. Try to incorporate these into your daily routine and give yourself some time to focus on your breathing.
